Haleakala Sunrise

Located on the island of Maui, Haleakala volcano is an otherworldly experience. The landscape is deeply sculpted and intensely coloured. The summit of the volcano is over 10,000 feet high and is cold all year round.

The morning this image was created, I was wearing a parka, hat and gloves to stay warm. The amazing sunrise lights the sky and clouds from below before it finally rises above the clouds flooding the summit with warming light.

A graduated neutral density filter allowed me to expose both the foreground and the sky so that the amazing quality of light could be shared.
