Katepwa Lake Opera

I was out shooting an old homestead on the edge of the Qu’Apelle Valley when I noticed some lovely fog floating down in the valley at the end of Katepwa lake. I drove into the valley thinking that I might photograph some of the nice cottages and their boats in the morning mist. However, these seagulls caught my attention and provided me with about half an hour of amusement as they came and went from this wooden structure used to tie up boats.

I used a 300mm telephoto lens to compress the hill in the distance into the photograph to give it some background. The mist softened the hill and through my viewfinder things looked great. However, the gull in the centre of the image began calling out and I worked to capture an image of him that looked like he was singing. The squawking was not really a pleasant bird call so as I thought of this gull as a singer, It was clear he was an opera singer (since I don’t fancy opera).
