Mystical Canyon

This image of the Grand Canyon was captured just before sunrise on a crisp fall day in 2007. The image was shot from the South Rim of the Canyon. Two days earlier a lightning strike on the north rim started a forest fire. The smoke from the fire was falling over the edge into the canyon where it created fabulous cloud like contrast in the early morning light.

Split neutral density filters were stacked to hold back five stops of light at the horizon while allowing enough light into the camera to bring the smoke out and the long exposure helped saturate the colours throughout the image.
